Government Launches EV Subsidy for Range Extenders in Germany

Germany’s Ministry for the Environment has announced that electric vehicles equipped with range extenders will now be eligible for the country’s new energy vehicle subsidy program. The policy, effective immediately, applies to new vehicle registrations starting from January 1, 2026. The initiative aims to lower the barrier to vehicle ownership for middle- and lower-income households and stimulate sluggish domestic car sales.

Under the new scheme, eligible consumers purchasing new electric vehicles with a range extender can receive a government subsidy ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 euros. A range extender is a small internal combustion engine that acts as an on-board generator, providing additional power when the main battery is low, thereby alleviating range anxiety.

The German Ministry of Transport stated that the government has allocated 30 billion euros (approximately 35 billion US dollars) for this program. It is estimated that the funds could support the purchase of around 800,000 vehicles by 2029. Owners can apply for the subsidy retroactively after registering their new car, simplifying the application process.

Notably, the subsidy policy imposes no restrictions based on the vehicle’s brand or country of origin. At a press conference, German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider explicitly stated that imported electric vehicles, including those from China, are equally eligible for the financial support. “We will face the challenge of competition and will not set limits in this regard,” Schneider said. He further emphasized, “German car manufacturers have a strong and competitive product portfolio, and we are confident of succeeding in a fair environment.”
