iPhone 18 Pro Redesign: Dynamic Island and Face ID Changes

According to reports from sources including tech leaker Jon Prosser, Apple is planning a significant screen redesign for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The front-facing camera cutout will be relocated to the upper-left corner of the display. This change is enabled by the introduction of a new under-display Face ID system, which will hide the TrueDepth sensors completely beneath the screen. Consequently, the signature Dynamic Island interaction area will also move from its current centered position at the top of the screen to this new upper-left location.

Since its debut on the iPhone 14 Pro series in 2022, the Dynamic Island has been centrally located, integrating the front camera and TrueDepth system within a pill-shaped area and providing dynamic, expandable notifications and controls. With the TrueDepth system now hidden, only a small, single cutout for the selfie camera will remain visible in the upper-left corner, in the area typically occupied by the status bar time display.

In this new configuration, the Dynamic Island will no longer be centered. Instead, it will periodically emerge from and cover the upper portion of the screen from its new position in the upper-left corner, while retaining its core functionality. This redesign is expected to enhance the screen’s visual integrity by removing the longstanding central “notch” or “pill” interruption.

Prosser’s claims are partially corroborated by other sources, though details vary. A previous report from The Information also stated the iPhone 18 Pro would feature under-display Face ID, “finally doing away with the black oval that has sat at the top of the iPhone screen since 2022,” leaving only a single camera cutout in the upper-left corner. However, other analysts, such as display expert Ross Young and Bloomberg, suggest the Dynamic Island may not relocate entirely but could instead become smaller while remaining centered.

According to Apple’s adjusted product roadmap, the iPhone 18 Pro series is expected to launch in September 2026, potentially alongside a long-rumored foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18 and an entry-level model, tentatively called the iPhone 18e, are reportedly scheduled for release in the spring of 2027.
