While major pharmacy chains and supermarkets in urban centers may carry one or two biodegradable options—often positioned in specialty wellness sections—shelf space is typically modest. Rural areas and smaller towns face even greater scarcity, with many local retailers citing low consumer demand, higher procurement costs, and logistical challenges as barriers to stocking these products consistently.

Online platforms have emerged as the most reliable source, offering broader selection, detailed ingredient transparency, and subscription services. Yet this digital reliance excludes populations with limited internet access or preference for immediate, in-person purchases. Retailer surveys indicate that while interest is rising, inventory decisions still prioritize volume-driven, lower-cost conventional brands.

Progress is evident: several countries now mandate sustainability labeling on feminine hygiene packaging, and pilot programs—in partnership with NGOs and municipalities—are introducing biodegradable pads through community health centers and schools. Still, true mainstream presence in neighborhood stores hinges on scalable production, competitive pricing, improved supply chain integration, and sustained public education. Until then, accessibility remains uneven—not a standard option, but a conscious choice requiring extra effort.
